The Economics of

Healthcare Disruption

For years now, healthcare has been pegged as the next major industry for tech disruption - and for good reason.  Healthcare spending has consistently outpaced inflation, now accounting for 17.5% of GDP, while quality and outcomes lag behind other developed countries, with many measures trending in the wrong direction.  Yet, despite countless attempts and billions of dollars invested, the healthcare industry has been remarkably resistant to meaningful disruption.  Why?  To understand this question and to forecast the future of technology in healthcare, it's essential to understand the complex economics underlying one of America's largest and most complicated industries.

As an economist, Andrew focuses on the interplay of health policy, provider markets, and benefit design with respect to health care costs, quality, and access. Leveraging his unique and diverse background in healthcare, his work seeks to bridge the divide between academia and industry - translating complex economic theory and research into tangible strategic and policy initiatives. He has been published in multiple business and economic journals, including a recent Forefront article in Health Affairs, and has presented in numerous conferences and industry forums.

Andrew received his graduate degree in health economics from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is also a member of the Hopkins Business of Health Initiative, an interdisciplinary research collaborative aimed at addressing the productivity challenges of the nation’s health system.
